On Baseball: Nine Games Into the Playoffs, Dodgers Are Still an Enigma

LOS ANGELES — The American League was in a hurry to resolve itself this October. The Cleveland Indians and the Toronto Blue Jays swept through the first round of the playoffs, and then Cleveland knocked out Toronto in five tidy games of the championship series.

The National League had other ideas, mostly because the Los Angeles Dodgers play there. Who are the Dodgers? After nine games this postseason, we still don’t know for sure. They split the first four of those nine and now the last four. In the middle was a 272-minute crucible in Washington that they won by one run, earning a date in this National League Championship Series.

In Game 4 on Wednesday, the Dodgers might have played their worst game of the season. The Chicago Cubs evened the series, two games apiece, with a 10-2 victory. The Dodgers made four errors, allowed 13 hits and stranded nine runners. That did not include Justin Turner, who was picked off second…
