Starting next year, the PGA Championship will no longer be the last of the four major golf tournaments — and the move from August to May also brings a new television deal.
The PGA of America announced Wednesday an 11-year agreement to remain on CBS Sports that will include ESPN carrying live coverage of the first two rounds, beginning in 2020.
Financial terms of the deal were not announced.
“I can tell you from our standpoint, the property was more valuable in May than in August,” said Sean McManus, chairman of CBS Sports. “We are paying a rights fee increase. It was definitely a more attractive package.”
Next year’s PGA Championship at Bethpage State Park in Long Island, N.Y., will conclude the current TV deal, which has Turner Sports airing weekday coverage. When ESPN takes over on weekdays in 2020, the tournament will be at Harding Park in San Francisco.
